On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11)
The first gift that was presented was gold. For us today gold is very much part of our lives, wedding bands, necklaces, bracelets. Mention gold and by word association you get jewellery.
But for the people that were around at the time of the birth of Jesus, gold was associated with one thing and that was God.
The place of worship in Jerusalem, the temple, was swathed in gold. Gold equalled God.
And that’s exactly the significance of the gift. Jesus was (and is) more than just the Son of God, he was (and is) God the Son.
Our understanding of the deity of Christ is crucial to the grasp of just exactly who he was (and is).
