Transmission and distribution refers to the different stages of carrying electricity over poles and wires from generators to a home or a business. The primary distinction between the two is the voltage level at which electricity moves in each stage. After electricity has been generated, a system of electrical wires carries the electricity from the source of generation to our homes and businesses.

The main objective of this paper is three-fold. First, to provide an overview of the current status of the power electronics technology, one of the key actors in the upcoming smart grid paradigm enabling maximum power throughputs and near-instantaneous control of voltages and currents in all links of the power system chain. Second, to provide a bridge between the power systems and the power electronic communities, in terms of their differing appreciation of how these devices perform when connected to the power grid. Third, to discuss on the role that the power electronics technology will play in supporting the aims and objectives of future decarbonized power systems. It would be fair to say that many of the ideas upon which the foundations of the Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems FACTS rest, evolved over a period of several decades, building on the experience gained in the areas of High Voltage Direct Transmission HVDC and reactive power compensation equipment, methods and operational control.

History of electric power transmission

Electric power transmission , the tools and means of moving electricity far from where it is generated, date back to the late 19th century. They include the movement of electricity in bulk formally called " transmission " and the delivery of electricity to individual customers " distribution ". In the beginning, the two terms were used interchangeably. Prior to electricity, various systems had been used for transmission of power across large distances. Chief among them were telodynamic cable in motion , pneumatic pressurized air , and hydraulic pressurized fluid transmission.

An electrical grid , electric grid or power grid , is an interconnected network for delivering electricity from producers to consumers. It consists of: [1]. Electrical grids vary in size from covering a single building through national grids which cover whole countries to transnational grids which can cross continents. Power stations connected to grids are often located near energy resources such as a source of fuel or to take advantage of renewable energy resources, and away from heavily-populated areas. A bulk-power transmission network is therefore used to move the power long distances, sometimes across international boundaries, until it reaches its wholesale customer usually the organisation that owns the local electric power distribution network.

Transmission & Distribution

OSHA is revising the construction standard for electric power line work to make it more consistent with the corresponding general industry standard and is also making some revisions to both the construction and general industry requirements. Here are some examples of the types of injuries and fatalities the standard will prevent:. The final rule includes new or revised requirements for fall protection, minimum approach distances, and arc-flash protection, and for host employers and contract employers to exchange safety-related information. The final rule also includes requirements for electrical protective equipment. The final rule became effective on July 10,

Note it is the presenter's opinion that the power system is the largest, most complex machine ever designed Generation, Transmission, Distribution, and Load.
