Tacit knowledge or implicit knowledge as opposed to formal, codified or explicit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it down or verbalizing it. However, the ability to speak a language, ride a bicycle, knead dough, play a musical instrument, or design and use complex equipment requires all sorts of knowledge which is not always known explicitly, even by expert practitioners, and which is difficult or impossible to explicitly transfer to other people. The term tacit knowing or tacit knowledge is attributed to Michael Polanyi in in Personal Knowledge. In his later work The Tacit Dimension he made the assertion that "we can know more than we can tell. While this concept made most of its impact on philosophy of science, education and knowledge management — all fields involving humans — for Polanyi it was also a means to show our evolutionary continuity with animals. Polanyi describes that many animals are creative, some even have mental representations, but they can possess tacit knowledge only, [2] except for humans who developed the capability of articulation and therefore can transmit partially explicit knowledge.

Despite nearly 20 years of controversy, researchers are still divided over the contributions of abstract and episodic knowledge to performance on implicit learning tasks, and whether these types of knowledge exert their effects unintentionally or unconsciously. The present paper reviews the evidence taken to support the episodic account of implicit learning. Although substantial evidence suggests that episodic knowledge influences performance on implicit learning tasks, at present there are no techniques for testing whether these influences occur outside of awareness. It is argued that future research should investigate whether the retrieval of episodic knowledge in implicit learning tasks is insensitive to intentional control, rather than focus on the issue of awareness. Preliminary evidence suggesting that episodic knowledge can exert a nonintentional influence on task performance is reviewed, followed by a discussion of the status of consciousness as an explanatory construct in psychology.
