Predictive Control of Power Converters and Electrical Drives (eBook, PDF)

Location: Vienna, Austria. Technical Chair:. All proceedings since , studies, reports and more Model Predictive Control MPC is a conceptually simple yet powerful methodology to control power converters, electric drives and large systems, such as electrical power grids. MPC provides many advantages over traditional controllers including the capability to intuitively handle a large variety of control problems by considering different modes of operation and directly incorporating system constraints and additional requirements.

In this chapter we revise basic principles and methods of model predictive control with a view towards applications in power electronics and drives. The simplest predictive control formulations use horizon-one cost functions, which can be related to well-established dead-beat controllers. Model predictive control using larger horizons has the potential to give significant performance benefits, but requires more computations at each sampling instant to solve the associated optimization problems. For particular classes of system models, we discuss practical algorithms, which make long-horizon predictive control suitable for power electronics applications. Skip to main content. Predictive Control in Power Electronics and Drives Abstract: Predictive control is a very wide class of controllers that have found rather recent application in the control of power converters. Research on this topic has been increased in the last years due to the possibilities of today's microprocessors used for the control. This paper presents the application of different predictive control methods to power electronics and drives. A simple classification of the most important types of predictive control is introduced, and each one of them is explained including some application examples.

UK Research Fellow. Model-based predictive control MPC for power converters and drives is a control technique that has gained attention in the research community. The main reason for this is that although MPC presents high computational burden, it can easily handle multivariable case and system constraints and nonlinearities in a very intuitive way. Taking advantage of that, MPC has been successfully used for different applications such as an active front end AFE , power converters connected to resistor inductor RL loads, uninterruptible power supplies, and high-performance drives for induction machines, among others. This article provides a review of the application of MPC in the power electronics area. Vazquez, S.
