Uncovering the Types of Rocks. Kristen Sweeney. The BIG Three:. When a geologist stumbles upon a mountain of mysterious mystical rocks, they know that there are three main types of rocks that may make up that mountain.

Each type of rock has characteristics that make it special and unique, and no two rocks are exactly the same. The three main types of mysterious rocks are Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic rocks. As a geologist, it is their job to unlock the mystery behind the rock. Igneous rocks are formed when liquid magma cools and hardens either inside the earth under the crust, or outside the earth after a volcano has erupted.

Igneous rocks can take on a variety of disguises because of all the different possible chemical make-ups of magma and the different cooling rates that the magma hardens at.

Geologists have to give igneous rocks a deeper look to really determine what type of rock it is. These types of rocks are formed as sediments; such as sand, pebbles, minerals, plants or animals, and are moved together by a force like water. Over time, the sediments form layers and harden into rock. Fossils form when a plant, animal, or track is captured in the layers of the rock and are preserved forever.

Some of the sedimentary rocks are held together by an electrical attraction, while others remain loose and brittle. This type of rock can be characterized by distinct layers of rock that run parallel to each other and can even look like stripes. Generally, the rocks are fairly soft and can break apart or crumble easily. Examples include limestone, flagstone or sandstone.

Geologists need to realize that sedimentary rocks are forming around us all the time, and most rocks around us are sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks are formed when igneous rocks or sedimentary rocks are under an extreme amount of heat and pressure.

The rocks don't actually melt. They undergo a metamorphosis hence the name, Meta morph ic. The rocks are under so much pressure and extreme heat that they physically change or react with other rocks or fluids below the crust. These types of reactions can create the look of bands or stripes to disguise the rocks. They become denser and more compact rocks and can have shiny crystals that formed during the chemical reactions. Metamorphic rocks hold an additional element of mystery for geologists since they are formed from change, and given the right amount of heat and pressure, they can change again.

With all the rocks in the world today and all the rocks that are forming every day, a Geologist's work is never done. Rocks will always be changing and forming, whether from heat and pressure or weather and water flow the mysteries of geology are multiplying every day. Helpful Hints for Tracking down a Mysterious Rock:.

Igneous- crystals, with air bubbles ex: basalt, obsidian. Sedimentary- layers, soft and brittle ex: limestone, sandstone. Metamorphic- shiny, ribbon like layers, bubbles ex: gneiss, marble.

Breccia is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed of large over two-millimeter diameter angular fragments. The spaces between the large fragments can be filled with a matrix of smaller particles or a mineral cement which binds the rock together.
