Chinese Religions and Philosophies
The government of China officially espouses state atheism , but in reality most of Chinese citizens including Communist Party members practice some kind of Chinese folk religion, especially Confucianism. Chinese civilization has historically long been a cradle and host to a variety of the most enduring religio - philosophical traditions of the world. Religious observance in China is on the rise. Yet alongside these rights come heightened government controls. Early waves of Christianity began with the arrival of Italian Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci in China in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. In the mid-nineteenth century, Christianity became a mobilizing political force: Hong Xiuquan developed a Christian-influenced ideology to mount the Taiping Rebellion — against the Qing Dynasty, attracting missionaries and revolutionaries alike. The rebels amassed control over more than one-third of Chinese territory and established a rival political order, known as the Heavenly Kingdom.

The book seeks to provide some guidelines on the cultural practices that believers may or may not be a part of, and offers sound biblical reasons for the decisions. It discusses the major festivals celebrated, the practice of ancestral worship and traditional Chinese medical care, and gives a brief description of the main tenets of the religious philosophies that undergird these traditions. The goal, asserts the author, is simply to help Christians live their faith to the fullest, while maintaining the fact that they come from an ethnic group with a long and rich heritage.
