Models developed to describe free radical crosslinking polymerizations may be divided into three classes: statistical models, kinetic descriptions, and kinetic gelation simulations. This paper provides a comparison of the three types of models by describing the approach, assumptions, strengths, and limitations of each when applied to lightly crosslinked systems. The greatest strength of the statistical approach arises from the wealth of post-gel structural information that can be obtained, however these models have difficulty accounting for history-dependent effects.
The purpose of this paper is to prepare superabsorbent polymers SAPs based on acrylic acid, which is considered hygroscopic material to incorporate in rubber formulation, which results in producing moisten rubber that is used as roofing sheets. SAPs were synthesized via free radical bulk polymerization technique using different content of cross-linker N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide and potassium persulfate. Differential scanning calorimeter, thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize SAPs and confirmed the formation of cross-linked hydrogel structure. The water absorbency and the gel fraction for sodium polyacrylate NaPA were investigated. Then, the influence of obtained NaPA on the swelling behavior of the prepared natural rubber NR compound has been discussed.

Superabsorbent polymers SAPs are widely applied in dryland agriculture. However, their functional property of repeated absorption and release of soil water exerts periodic effects on the hydraulic parameters and water-retention properties of soil, and as this property gradually diminishes with time, its effects tend to be unstable. During the day continuous soil cultivation experiment described in this paper, horizontal soil column infiltration and high-speed centrifugation tests were conducted on SAP-treated soil to measure unsaturated diffusivity and soil water characteristic curves. The SAP significantly obstructed water diffusion in the soil in the early days of the experiment, but the effect gradually decreased in the later period.
