Science and Civilisation in China —present is an ongoing series of books about the history of science and technology in China published by Cambridge University Press. It was initiated and edited by British historian Joseph Needham — In , Needham—along with an international team of collaborators—initiated the project to study the science, technology, and civilisation of ancient China. This project produced a series of volumes published by Cambridge University Press. Volume 3 of the encyclopedia was the first body of work to describe Chinese improvements to cartography , geology , seismology and mineralogy. It also includes descriptions of nautical technology, sailing charts, and wheel-maps. Needham's transliteration of Chinese characters uses the Wade-Giles system, though the aspirate apostrophe e.

After twenty-seven years—during which the author published four other books and many essays on this topic, and important studies on other topics—we have a volume well worth the wait. In , Needham published a lecture he had given to the Newcomen Society two years earlier. Roughly a tenth the size of this volume, it was an excellent summary of what antiquarians and historians of technology then knew. However, the history of siderurgy has grown and metamorphosed in the half-century since, in part because classical sinologists have multiplied and, unlike those of mid-century, are no longer terrified of science and technology. Even more decisively, the great successes of archeological excavation in China, and the emergence there of world-class laboratory investigators of ancient metallurgy in the s and s, have made it possible to solve problems on which no texts cast a decisive light.

Concerning these four divinities, of respectable rank in the Taoist bureaucracy, the following particulars have been handed down. The title of the first of the four signifies Heavenly Prince', that of the other three' Mysterious Conunander'. Among his attributes may be seen the sun and moon, and a measuring-rod or carpenter's square. The two great luminaries imply the making of the calendar, so important for a primarily agriculrural sociery, the efforts, ever renewed, to reconcile celestial periodicities. The carpenter's square is no ordinary tool, but the gnomon for measuring the lengths of the sun's solstitial shadows.

The Gunpowder Epic is one of three planned publications on military technology within Dr Needham's immense undertaking. The discovery of gunpowder in China by the 9th century AD was followed by its rapid applications. It is now clear that the whole development from bombs and grenades to the invention of the metal-barrel hand gun took place in the Chinese culture area before Europeans had any knowledge of the mixture itself.
