The so-called PID Potential Induced Degradation of photovoltaic panels is an effect that affects the potential of the modules with respect to the ground and that affects the power of the module by reducing it consistently over time.
Potential-induced degradation PID is a potential-induced performance degradation in crystalline photovoltaic modules , caused by so-called stray currents. This effect may cause power loss of up to 30 percent. The cause of the harmful leakage currents, besides the structure of the solar cell, is the voltage of the individual photovoltaic PV modules to the ground. PID occurs mostly at negative voltage with respect to the ground potential and is accelerated by high system voltages, high temperatures, and high humidity. As photovoltaics are connected both in series and in parallel, the panels are exposed to high potentials compared to the ground; thus, high voltage stress HVS occurs. The scope of this paper is to analyze experimentally the potential induced degradation PID in organic solar cells.
Because it has no moving parts the major source of reliability issues in other types of electrical generating systems , a PV module's operating life is largely determined by the stability and resistance to corrosion of the materials from which it is constructed. Manufacturer's guarantees of up to 20 years indicate the quality of bulk silicon PV modules currently being produced. Nevertheless, there are several failure modes and degradation mechanisms which may reduce the power output or cause the module to fail. Nearly all of these mechanisms are related to water ingress or temperature stress.
