This article explores a brief history of the Air Prevention and Control of Air Pollution Act and the reason for its introduction. In any State in which the Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act, 6 of , is not in force, or that Act is in force but the State Government has not constituted a State Board for the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution under that Act, the State Government shall, with effect from such date as it may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint, constitute a State Board for the Prevention and Control of Air Pollution under such name as may be specified in the notification, to exercise the powers conferred on, and perform the functions assigned to, that Board under this Act.

A State Board constituted under this Act shall be nominated by the State govt. An Act to provide for the prevention and control of water pollution and the maintaining or restoring of wholesomeness of water, for the establishment, with a view to carrying out the purposes aforesaid, of Boards for the prevention and control of water pollution, for conferring on and assigning to such Boards powers.

Some of the important sections regulating the prevention of water pollution as per the act are as discussed below.
